Hello CAKE LOVERS and BLOG READERS,

I hope you all had a wonderful New Year! 2009 was a great year for me... a lot of amazing life changes! I found a new talent that I never knew existed. Throughout this cake extravaganza, my family and friends have always been supportive, people from around the world would compliment my work and share words of encouragement, bloggers would follow my blog every weekend, and previous clients continue to keep me in mind.

Thank YOU... you have all made this a wonderful experience!

I am really looking forward to what 2010 will bring me! Therefore, I've made the decision to take a break. It's been difficult working full time and having a cake due each weekend. There's so much I want to do... I want to see what else is out there!

Please keep in mind that this is temporary. I have plans, so please don't go too far... I can't keep away from seeing people smile.

This was a last minute cake order from my COO. This cake will be for our company Christmas party tonight. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, but I hope they will enjoy it!

I forgot to bring my camera, so this picture was taken with my iPhone. The clarity isn't really great and I didn't get to take many shots. I actually made our company logo and added it onto the side of the green present. Hopefully someone will take photos! :)

Danny meets Elmo for the first time! lolThis was actually one of my favorite cakes... Unfortunately, after dropping off the cake, I tried transferring the photos onto my computer and somehow they mysteriously disappeared. So I had to wait for pictures from the mom. It's too bad because I had some really nice shots of Elmo!
I deliverd the cake in San Francisco, but the birthday party was in Hayward. It was a very hot day and they had a long drive... someone carried the cake on their lap, so the cake is a little lopsided and the candle was suppose to be tilted to the right.

For those who'd like to place an order, I can also draw out designs of your cake! Clients usually just ask me to surprise them and trust my work as I go. But, sometimes others like to see a visual idea of the cake before the event. So don't be afraid to ask me to draw out a design for you... I'd be happy to do so! :)

Unfortunately, I can't guarantee that the cake will look exactly the same as the design. Designing a cake is not as simple as drawing on paper! lol As you can see the TV from the actual Yo Gabba Gabba show is missing. I prepared the characters on screen, but as soon as I finished creating the TV... I realized that the TV was too big and too pink for a boy's birthday cake. The TV would have over powered the cake and the cake would have looked too busy. I also did not put a Happy Birthday sign in front of the characters because I did not want to cover them. Maybe I can make a TV screen for my next cake! :)

If for any reason the cake will not look exactly the same as designed, I will definitely notify you ahead of time. Again, I am willing to work closely with you to ensure that the cake is to your liking!

For every drawing I make, I will be sure to post it along with the outcome of the cake... Now you will be able to see my artistic side of making cakes! Enjoy!

I received a short and simple comment today which really made my day! :) It was a comment on my recent cake, Yo Gabba Gabba!

I decided to find out who the person was that commented on my cake to thank them personally. So as I was looking at his blog and thought to myself, "Why does this guy have Yo Gabba Gabba all over his blog?" Then, I looked at his profile and noticed that this guy works for Yo Gabba Gabba!

Parker Jacobs, the show’s Animation Art Director and lead Character Designer of Yo Gabba Gabba, personally commented on my cake! :) I couldn't believe it, so I emailed him myself...

I made this for Mila who was celebrating her birthday and her retirement. Mila's favorite flower are orchids and her favorite colors are pink and green. Mila retired from the post office, therefore, I thought it would be nice to incorporate "mail" on the cake.

Michael and I decided to host our rehearsal dinner at a bowling alley! Since the wedding would be formal, we wanted to do something fun and laid back... so this was the simple "groom's cake!"

Another simple baby shower cake... I'll be honest, this was the most difficult cake to deliver!!! It was a last minute order, a very very hot day, and the delivery was made to Sonoma. As you can see, the cake didn't hold up very well. :(

I made this simple cake for my brother's 21st birthday. I had a completely different design in mind, but unfortunately, I had to make Mattie's cake. However, Mattie's cake was beautiful! :)

Bay Area Discovery Museum - Silent Auction Winner is MATTIE! :)

This is Mattie, the lucky birthday girl who won a free birthday party at the Bay Area Discovery Museum and a free birthday cake by Mae Makes Cakes!
The funny thing is... Mattie saw her birthday cake and said,
"Mommy, look it's fondant!" Mattie even said "fondant" with the right accent! lol She's so smart... I'm glad that I was able to make a cake for a little girl that understood my work!

Hello everyone,

A blog update on Mae Makes Cakes is long overdue...

After all the planning, the BIG DAY, honeymoon, family events, and work... I'm finally settled back into reality!

Thank you to those who have supported me and understood me through this process! I've received several emails from people just checking in to see how I am doing and if I am married, it was very thoughtful. I am now enjoying the married life!

Unfortunately, I couldn't invite EVERYONE to my wedding...

My friend Willette celebrated her son's 1st birthday with a circus theme. She had the popcorn and candy machine, a clown, inflatable jumpers, and cute popcorn goody bags! The party was definitely planned out and she needed a cake to go with the theme. :)
Unfortunately, I was unable to take a picture of Isaiah with the cake because I was running late for my own wedding shower. Hopefully I can get a picture of him soon!

This cake was actually designed by Willette. She specifically drew out a design for the cake. I added the stars when I made the delivery.
I also made a clown smash cake, but did not get a chance to take a picture. :( Again, hopefully I can get a picture of him eating it! :)

The Monkey Bar Cake! - Benjamin's 2nd Birthday

Here is a picture of the cake at the event. Unfortunately, I was unable to take a picture of Benjamin with the cake... The little guy was having too much fun at The Little Gym. Benjamin's mother mentioned that he loves monkeys and the monkey bars. Therefore, I wanted to have a monkey hanging with all the animals to see. A Roaring Birthday Cake! - Christopher's "Baby Pang" 1st Birthday

My two good friends, Jane and Corey, celebrated their son's 1st birthday at Moonstar. It was also a "Red Egg and Ginger Party" which is a Chinese tradition where the proud parents introduce their new baby to family and friends. A very cute family indeed, they all matched by wearing green... It actually went well with the cake! :) Happy Birthday Christopher!

Dear Mae,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, the nationally recognized one-of-a-kind indoor/outdoor children's museum that offers a full range of programs for children, parents, school groups and educators. Located on 7 1/2 acres in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at Fort Baker in Sausalito, CA, the Museum's unique programs feature hands-on art, science, environmental and media exhibitions, performances, special events and ongoing educational curricula... all with a focus on fun! Over 300,000 children, parents and educators from throughout the Bay Area visited the museum last year, including those who participated in special outreach and in-school programs. The museum is a winner of the National Tourist Destination Award and the Historic Preservation Award.

I am writing to request a donation of 1 custom cake for 15 kids + adults for the auction portion of our major fundraising event, PLAYDATE 2009, which will take place on May 2, 2009. The event will combine the efforts of the museum’s Board of Trustees and the all-volunteer Discovery Council. The evening will feature cocktails and silent auction in our premiere exhibit, Lookout Cove, followed by dinner, live auction, and entertainment in a spectacular tent at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge. Expected attendance is over 500 people.

Funds raised will allow the museum to continue to advance its mission to connect children to their local environment and the diverse communities that live here. Every gift made in support of the Museum is an investment in its educational programs and exhibits, and in the many children the Museum exists to serve.

"Modern Nesting" Baby Shower Cake

This is the quilt that was given to the Mother-to-be... Congratulations Lisa!:)
Since the theme was "Mondern Nesting"... I wanted the cake to be focused on the quilt and also give the cake a modern look.
I think the square and rectangular shape tiers gave the cake a unique look instead of simple round or squared tiers.

I would have to say that this is one of my favorite designs! :)

"Curious George" theme party... Another cake for Hudson, but this time he celebrated his birthday with five other kids. Hudson, Skye, Connor, Elise, and Collin all turned 3 this month. Unfortunatly, not all of the birthday kids were together when I delivered the cake. This is Hudson and Jared beside the cake.

I really tried to make it look like Curious George and this was the best I could do. :) I hope you guys like the cake!

Dear Mae,
Many many thanks again for the amazingly creative and delicious cake! You are so talented and your cake was the big "wow" factor at the party. It was a good thing you left some of your cards. The cake decorations were like nothing we had seen before and the cake itself was a hit. A couple people felt the frosting was a bit thick and sweet, but I am not sure what you could do about that and still have the same artistic achievement. It was really great! Thank you!

I just wanted to thank everyone for all of your support and encouragement. Thank you for your interests, referrals, and word of mouth. It's been an amazing experience so far. Honestly, I never realized how many people want cake! :) I did not expect to have a lot of people inquiring about my cakes. I've been getting a lot of orders and my weekends are filling in quick! It's because of YOU, I get to share my joy of making cakes! I'm just really glad I can put a SMILE to your face.

Unfortunately, I cannot take any orders for the month of April and May. It will be a very busy time for me as I will be focusing on planning my wedding! :) So if you would like to make a cake order, please let me know soon! Until then, I'd be happy to make your cake. Sports Cake - Michael's 4th Birthday!

This is Michael, the Birthday Boy! I had a better shot of him smiling with the cake, but I accidentally erased it on my camera. :(
I would have to say, "I have never seen a boy's face light up like his did as soon as he saw his birthday cake!" All the hard work paid off... It really made my day! :)
Michael's mom celebrated his birthday at the San Rafael Gymnastics. She wanted his cake to be a sports theme with different sports around the cake. Therefore, I wanted the cake to have the sports balls show more and make it look as if a kid designed the cake.

Princess Tiara Cake - (An order from across the world!)

This was a very LAST MINUTE cake order from SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA for a delivery today, Saturday, the 17th! Because of the time difference, I received an email around 3:30pm on Friday to make a 2 tiered cake with a Cinderella slipper- it was so last minute, I did not have enough time to mold the slipper. So I made a 2 tiered cake with a simple tiara on top of a pillow with pearls, and a scroll instead.
Anjee Macaraeg from Sydney, Australia visited San Francisco not too long ago. During her visit, she was accommodated by family friends in San Leandro. To thank them for their generosity, she wanted to give a cake as a gift for their daughter's 18th birthday. Very thoughtful! Although she is located thousands of miles away, she was very easy to work with!

I gave the pillow a unique design so it would look different than most pillows. The crown was made of gumpaste and it took a while to dry. Gumpaste is very hard to work with, it tends to crack! >:/ The rhinestones are not edible of course, only used as accents to the cake.

Monkey & Banana's - Hudson's 3rd Birthday! (MY FIRST CAKE ORDER!)

This is Hudson, the birthday boy, with his cake. Hudson looked at the cake and said, "Monkey's and Bananas!" He was so adorable!!!

I added the finishing touches before I made the delivery:
Name and Birthday sign.

This was my very first cake order! It was pretty exciting to have someone out of my circle ask me to make them a cake. I posted an ad on Craigslist and I've been receiving many comments about my cakes. =)

Hudson's mother contacted me and mentioned that her son wanted Monkeys and Bananas on his cake. The bottom layer and the bananas are cake and filling. To be honest, the monkey was the most difficult part of the cake!
